The Trails and Open Space Program has one grant program to implement Board Ends Policy E-4.3.1 which states the District will Support additional trails, parks and open space along creeks and in the watersheds when reasonable, and Outcome 4 of the Clean, Safe Creeks and Natural Flood Protection Program, which calls for the creation of community partnerships to identify and provide access to 70 miles of open space and/or trails.
Objectives of the program (consistent with Outcome 4) include:
- Partnerships to provide public access to 70 miles of open space and/or trails along creeks.
- Increase in community recreational opportunities.
- Increased number of bicycle paths for alternative transportation.
- Opportunities for open spaces, trails and parks incorporated into flood protection projects.
Since the year 2000, more than 65.5 miles of trail have been constructed along Coyote, San Tomas Aquino, Berryessa, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Calabazas, Penitencia, Thompson, Stevens, Uvas, and Llagas creeks, and the Guadalupe River. Additional projects for District partnering are in progress and are currently in the planning, design and construction phases. These projects are currently carried out through the District's Trail and Open Space Grants and Joint Use and Joint Trail Agreements.
